By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans with first-time COVID-19 related offenses now have an opportunity to clear their records, thanks to a new initiative by the Criminal Records Board under the Community Rehabilitation Department. Known as “automatic expungement,” the program is designed to give individuals a clean slate and a second chance for minor offenses.
Among the offenses eligible for automatic expungement are first-time cannabis possession charges and first-time breaches of COVID-19 regulations, which affected many otherwise law-abiding citizens during the pandemic.
Speaking via Zoom, Leslie Hamilton, Chairman of the Criminal Records Board, explained the reasoning behind the initiative. “This is about giving people a second chance. Many individuals committed minor offenses under extraordinary circumstances. Expunging these records allows them to move forward without the burden of a criminal record.”
To apply, individuals must access the application forms, which are available at the Criminal Records Board or the Magistrate’s Court.
This initiative aims to support rehabilitation and remove unnecessary barriers for those who made mistakes during challenging times. It reflects a progressive approach to addressing minor infractions while promoting fairness and second chances.
For more information on eligibility and the application process, individuals are encouraged to contact the Criminal Records Board.
