By Belize Live News Staff: The government of Taiwan has extended a $100,000 USD donation to assist cattle farmers in Belize’s flood-affected regions of the Belize River Valley and Crooked Tree. This initiative, led by NEMO and the Belize Livestock Producers’ Association, aims to support recovery efforts following significant losses sustained during Tropical Storm Sara in November 2024.
The donation is part of a two-phase project. In the immediate term, funds will address urgent needs, such as providing silage and feed for livestock, ensuring survival amid decimated pastures. In the long term, the project will focus on resilience-building, including the development of flood-resistant pastures and advanced farming techniques to better prepare for natural hazards.
Amalia Mai, CEO of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of partnerships, saying, “This generous recovery assistance contribution of US$100,000 comes at a very critical time. It underscores our shared values and mutual support.”
Daniel Mendez, NEMO Coordinator, highlighted the devastating impact of the floods, noting, “Phase one of this project meets immediate needs, while phase two focuses on building resilience for the future.”
H.E. Lily-Wen Hsu, Ambassador of Taiwan to Belize, reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to supporting Belize, stating, “We know how important the cattle industry is to Belize’s agribusiness and economic development.”
The initiative is expected to bolster the recovery of cattle farmers, who form the backbone of Belize’s agricultural sector, ensuring sustainability and resilience for years to come.
