Police probe murder of Belize City fisherman on Turneffe Atoll

By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities have launched the first murder investigation of the new year following the discovery of a fisherman’s lifeless body on Turneffe Atoll. The victim has been identified as 59-year-old Godfrey Hyde of Belize City, whose body was found with apparent gunshot injuries.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hilberto Romero, Hyde had been staying at one of the islands for some time under the care of a local caretaker. On Saturday, January 4, 2025, a delivery of supplies was made to the island. Shortly after, Hyde’s body was discovered.

“Upon arrival, they saw the lifeless body of a male person at one of the islands with apparent gunshot injuries. The body was identified to be that of Godfrey Hyde, 59 years, a fisherman of Belize City,” ACP Romero stated.

Scenes of crime technicians recovered one expended shell at the location. As of now, police have not determined a motive, and no arrests have been made in connection with this heinous act.

Authorities are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.
