By Belize Live News Staff: Questions surround the death of Anthony Lewis, whose hands and feet were bound with wire, and who was beaten to death in Corozal in December 2024 after allegedly trespassing on private property. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has explained that self-defense may play a critical role in determining why murder charges have not been brought in the case.
“When an issue of self-defense is raised in any investigation, it is not the police that determines the charges—it is the DPP’s [Director of Public Prosecutions] office,” Williams said. “If a person comes into your home and you are attacked by that person, the law gives you some leverage to protect yourself and your home. I’m sure those are things the DPP will consider.”
The incident, which occurred on private property, has sparked debate over the use of force and the rights of property owners. Authorities confirmed that the file has been sent to the DPP’s office for further review.
