Opening of cane crop season 2024-2025 kicks off in Tower Hill

Opening of cane crop season 2024-2025 kicks off in Tower Hill

By Belize Live News Staff: The 2024-2025 sugar processing season officially begins today at the Tower Hill Factory. The date, confirmed by the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB) last Friday, marks a significant moment for one of Belize’s key industries.

However, this year’s crop comes with added challenges. Farmers face the ongoing effects of climate change, including alternating droughts and floods that have impacted cane fields in Corozal and Orange Walk. Additionally, the sugar industry is battling biological threats like froghopper pests and fusarium wilt, which have taken a toll on production.

The official “cane toss” ceremony is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. sharp, symbolizing the commencement of the season. Belize Sugar Industries Limited will also have informational booths on display for attendees.

This season stands as a testament to the resilience of Belize’s cane farmers, who continue to weather environmental and economic hurdles to sustain one of the country’s top revenue earners.
