By Belize Live News Staff: A man was beaten to death in Corozal on Sunday night in what authorities are treating as a death investigation rather than a murder case. The incident unfolded on G Street, where Anthony Lewis reportedly entered a home and confronted family members, leading to a violent altercation that ended in his death.
Preliminary reports suggest the confrontation may have been fueled by allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Lewis and a minor living at the home. According to police, Lewis had been charged previously with an offense linked to the family and was out on bail while awaiting trial at the Supreme Court.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hilberto Romero explained that Lewis “had no lawful authority to be at the house” and that the family defended themselves when he allegedly acted aggressively. Lewis was tied up during the altercation and ultimately succumbed to the injuries inflicted upon him.
Police are investigating whether the beating was an act of self-defense or if further charges will be filed. According to ACP Romero, the case file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for guidance.
At least two men and one woman were reportedly detained as part of the investigation, but as of now, no charges have been brought against them.
Police are expected to release further updates as the investigation continues.
