By Belize Live News Staff: As Belize’s first GST-free weekend begins, shoppers are reporting mixed experiences. Some retailers have reportedly claimed that the GST exemption does not apply to credit or debit card transactions, citing reasons such as additional bank charges.

In response, the Government of Belize Press Office clarified that the GST exemption applies to all purchases, regardless of payment method. “Shoppers are informed that on the four days designated as GST-Free days, ALL immediate retail purchases, whether by cash or credit/debit card, carry no GST,” the press office stated.

Consumers are advised to check their receipts carefully to ensure they are benefiting from the GST relief and to report any discrepancies to the relevant authorities.

The GST-free weekend is aimed at easing financial burdens for families, but its success relies on proper compliance by retailers and consumer vigilance.
