Government of Belize hosts marine spatial planning knowledge exchange with Barbados

By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize welcomed representatives from Barbados’ Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) and Marine Spatial Planning Unit for an in-person peer-to-peer knowledge exchange event on December 3, 2024. Organized by Belize’s Blue Bond and Finance Permanence Unit (BBFP), the session provided the Barbados team with a comprehensive understanding of Belize’s pioneering Blue Bonds program, widely regarded as a model for successful conservation finance initiatives.

The event marked a highlight in a week-long Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) knowledge exchange between the two nations, running from December 2–6, 2024. Facilitated by The Nature Conservancy, a strategic partner in both countries’ blue bond negotiations, the exchange aims to strengthen cross-national collaboration in marine conservation, ocean management, and sustainable economic development within the blue economy.

Participants explored the governance structure of Belize’s Blue Bonds program and its alignment with both national and international conservation targets. These discussions offered valuable insights into Belize’s approach to integrating marine spatial planning with ocean conservation and protected area management, highlighting best practices and innovative strategies.

This knowledge-sharing initiative underscores a shared commitment to fostering sustainable marine resource use and advancing marine spatial planning in the Caribbean. Both Belize and Barbados are working to refine their respective frameworks for the sustainable management of ocean spaces. For Belize, these efforts align with the ongoing development of the Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan (BSOP), which aims to bolster ocean conservation while promoting economic resilience for communities dependent on marine resources.

The exchange event represents a meaningful step toward deeper partnerships and enhanced technical expertise in marine spatial planning across the Caribbean.
