Mesopotamia heats up: Lee Mark Chang rumored to challenge Shyne Barrow

By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is bracing for what could be a turbulent internal showdown, as political maneuvering begins to shape the race in the Mesopotamia constituency. Reports suggest that Lee Mark Chang, former President of the Senate and well-known restaurateur, may challenge Shyne Barrow, the UDP Leader, in a bold bid to unseat him.

A flyer circulating today indicates that Chang, who is aligned with Tracy Panton’s faction within the Alliance For Democracy, may run for the Mesopotamia division. Chang’s candidacy would not only put him against Barrow but also bring financial backing and the weight of his name recognition into the contest. Chang, who grew up in Mesopotamia and has deep ties to the community, could pose a formidable challenge.

However, Chang has not confirmed his candidacy and denied knowledge of the flyer when contacted. He remained noncommittal, stating he could neither confirm nor deny the reports.

Sources close to Tracy Panton’s camp, however, indicate that this proposal is serious, with John Saldivar reportedly advocating for Chang’s bid. If the proposal goes forward, Barrow could find himself in a three-way race, facing internal competition from Chang as well as Lawrence Ellis of the People’s United Party (PUP).

This contest has the potential to significantly alter the political landscape in Mesopotamia. Chang, despite his notable achievements, has faced electoral defeats in the past, losing to Francis Fonseca in 2015 and to Kareem Musa in 2020. Should he formally enter the race, this will mark another pivotal moment in his political journey.

For Shyne Barrow, this development could escalate into a critical test of his leadership within the UDP, as he navigates opposition both within and outside his party. The coming weeks are likely to reveal more about whether Chang will officially join the race and how this will shape the Mesopotamia election.
