Belize’s Ombudsman Office relocates to Belmopan for improved accessibility

By Belize Live News Staff: For the first time in its history, the Office of the Ombudsman of Belize is moving out of Belize City and relocating to Belmopan. The transition will take effect on December 2, marking a significant change for an institution that has been rooted in the city since its establishment more than two decades ago.

Ombudsman Gilbert Swaso explained the rationale behind the move, citing various challenges with the current office location on Freetown Road. Among the issues faced were accessibility difficulties for the elderly and disabled, security concerns, and limited parking options.

“The fact is that this office has posed several challenges as it relates to safety and accessibility,” Swaso stated. “We’ve had numerous cases where elderly and disabled persons were unable to access or have difficulties accessing the office. Parking has also been a challenge, especially during midday hours when traffic in the area is particularly congested.”

Swaso also highlighted the importance of finding a new location that would better serve the public, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and disabled. After a thorough search, the office identified a building in Belmopan at 5200 Mount Margaret Drive that met these requirements. The new office is located on a ground floor, providing improved accessibility for all citizens.

The decision to move is aimed at ensuring that the Ombudsman’s office continues to fulfill its mission of serving the people of Belize more effectively, especially those who need it the most. By relocating to Belmopan, the office hopes to overcome previous logistical challenges and enhance its ability to provide assistance to those seeking justice and advocacy.
