Weekend tragedy: Two pedestrians die in traffic accidents

By Belize Live News Staff: Police are investigating two fatal traffic incidents that occurred over the weekend in the Orange Walk District, leaving two men dead.

The first incident took place late Friday evening near August Pine Ridge. Luis Ku, a 57-year-old resident of the area, was reportedly walking along the roadside when he was struck by a black Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Bernhard Redecop, hit Ku on the right side of the road. Authorities confirmed that Ku died at the scene due to the impact.

In a second incident on Sunday evening, 67-year-old Fabio Can was riding his bicycle southbound on the Phillip Goldson Highway between miles 57 and 58. Can was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle, which failed to stop. The collision hurled him onto the shoulder of the highway, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police have labeled the case a hit-and-run and are appealing to the public for any information regarding the driver or vehicle involved.

“Upon arrival, we saw the lifeless body of Mr. Can, who had been transported for medical attention but unfortunately did not survive,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero. “The driver did not stop. We are looking for the vehicle at this time.”

Romero also commented on the Friday evening incident, saying, “The individual was knocked down right. Yes, it was confirmed the driver was at fault.”

Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
