By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans across the country are coming together to celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day, a tribute to the resilience, courage, and enduring cultural contributions of the Garifuna people. Despite the recent passage of Tropical Storm Sara, which brought heavy rains and gusty winds to areas like Dangriga, the festivities are in full swing.
The National Garifuna Council (NGC) has organized events in major Garifuna hubs, including Belize City, Belmopan, Dangriga, and Punta Gorda. In Belize City, the day began with a vibrant procession from the Belcan Bridge to St. Martin de Porres Church, where a special Mass was held. The celebrations continue at the Belize City Center with cultural performances and speeches commemorating the Garifuna journey.
A highlight of the day is the official ceremony at Alejo Beni Park in Dangriga, where the re-enactment of the Garifuna arrival by boat serves as a poignant reminder of their first landing in Belize. This historical moment, which dates back to 1802, marked the beginning of the Garinagu’s settlement after their harrowing journey from Honduras.
The Garifuna people’s story is one of struggle and triumph. Originally from the island of St. Vincent, they fiercely resisted British colonization before being exiled to the island of Baliceaux. From there, they were relocated to Roatán, Honduras, and eventually made their way to Belize’s shores, bringing with them a rich culture of music, dance, and language.
Today, the Garifuna are an integral part of Belize’s cultural tapestry, and their influence is felt in every corner of the country. Garifuna Settlement Day not only honors their arrival but also serves as a celebration of their indomitable spirit and significant contributions to Belizean identity.
Belize Live News joins the nation in wishing all Garinagu and Belizeans a joyful and reflective Garifuna Settlement Day. Let’s celebrate safely and remember the legacy of those who paved the way for future generations.
