By Belize Live News Staff: As Tropical Storm Sara lingers near our shores, Belizeans are experiencing the full brunt of its power. Torrential rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are impacting the entire country, with central and southern regions bearing the brunt of the storm’s fury. The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has issued an urgent Excessive Rainfall Warning, urging citizens to be vigilant and prepared for potential flooding.
This morning, Sara was located just 160 miles southeast of Belize City, packing sustained winds of 45 mph. While the storm remains stationary for now, forecasters warn that its slow movement means prolonged periods of heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.
Coastal communities are also facing dangerous marine conditions. A Small Craft Warning is in effect, with rough seas and waves reaching up to 12 feet. NEMO advises all mariners to seek safe harbor immediately and stay tuned for updates.
Despite the gloomy conditions, temperatures remain warm across the country, with coastal areas hovering around 83°F (28°C) and inland areas reaching 84°F (29°C). However, the relentless rain and strong winds are making for a miserable day outdoors.
The good news is that some relief may be on the horizon. Forecasters predict that the showers and thunderstorms will begin to decrease by Sunday night. However, NEMO cautions that the threat of flooding will persist even after the storm moves on.
Belizeans are encouraged to stay informed about the latest weather developments by monitoring NEMO and the Hydrology Unit for updates. Remember, safety is paramount during this severe weather event.
