Tropical Depression #19 threatens Belize with heavy rainfall and possible flooding

By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans are being urged to prepare for potential flooding as Tropical Depression #19 churns towards the country, bringing with it the threat of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The National Meteorological Service of Belize has issued an Excessive Rainfall Watch, warning of “moist and unstable weather conditions” that are expected to impact the entire country over the next 48 hours.

Already this morning, showers and thunderstorms have been reported in northern and coastal regions. This activity is predicted to intensify and spread across Belize throughout the day and into the evening. While some respite is expected tonight, coastal and offshore areas will continue to experience showers.

Tropical Depression #19, currently located 250 miles east of Honduras, is fueling this unsettled weather. With sustained winds of 35 mph, the system is moving westward at 15 mph and is expected to bring further downpours, particularly to coastal and southern Belize, as it approaches.

Authorities are taking the threat seriously. NEMO (National Emergency Management Organization) is advising residents to stay informed about weather updates and has activated its emergency hotline (936). The Hydrology Unit (822-0667) is also on standby to provide information on flood risks.

This developing weather situation comes as Belize enjoys warm temperatures, with highs of 84°F (29°C) along the coast and 85°F (30°C) inland. However, the idyllic conditions are likely to be disrupted by the heavy rainfall and potential for flooding.

Mariners and those involved in coastal activities should also be aware that sea conditions are expected to worsen, with wave heights increasing throughout the day.

Residents are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant, stay tuned to official weather reports, and follow any guidance issued by NEMO and the National Meteorological Service.
