By Belize Live News Staff: Senator and United Democratic Party chairman Michael Peyrefitte has raised questions about the possibility of general elections in 2025, citing the Government’s request for $343,787 in supplementary funding for the Elections and Boundaries Department. Peyrefitte urged the Government to disclose if a date for the elections has been set, implying that such an appropriation signals electoral preparations.
In addition to his concerns about elections, Peyrefitte criticized the broader supplementary budget request of $106 million. This amount is intended for repayments from the 2023-2024 fiscal year and to secure future funding for 2024-2025. Highlighting what he described as “bad planning” and fiscal mismanagement, Peyrefitte argued that even after multiple budget cycles since the initial post-COVID leniency, the Government continues to struggle with accurate financial projections. He remarked that in any other business setting, such miscalculations would lead to dismissal.
Finally, Peyrefitte reminded the Senate that arrogance in leadership often backfires, noting that Belizeans have a history of voting out perceived high-handed leaders.
