Belize retains 260,000 tonne sugar quota with UK under trade deal

Belize retains 260,000 tonne sugar quota with UK under trade deal

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s sugar industry received a significant boost with the confirmation of its export quota to the United Kingdom. The Ministry of Foreign Trade announced that the UK will continue to import 260,000 tonnes of raw cane sugar at a 0% tariff under the CARIFORUM-UK Economic Partnership Agreement. This ensures duty-free, quota-free access for Belize’s sugar exports through 2025.

Sugar remains Belize’s leading export, supporting over 12,000 jobs and contributing approximately 41% of the country’s foreign exchange earnings. The decision secures critical market access, even as the industry faces challenges like the fusarium fungus affecting cane production.
