By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize City Council is facing a hefty bill of $1.6 million to rehabilitate 157 damaged streets across the city. A recent street damage assessment report outlined the deteriorating conditions of roads in all ten city divisions, highlighting the urgent need for repairs. The Collet area requires the most attention, with repairs estimated at nearly $423,000, while the Pickstock division will need around $8,453—the lowest among the divisions.
City Administrator Albert Vaughan attributed the increase in road damage to weeks of heavy rainfall, which created new potholes and worsened existing ones. Interestingly, of the streets listed for repair, 13 had been paved just this year. This has raised questions about the durability of recent roadworks and whether the council needs to rethink its approach to road maintenance.
The council’s report emphasizes that significant funds will be required, with Collet and Lake Independence receiving priority due to their high number of critical streets. Residents are hopeful that the repairs will be completed promptly to improve road safety and ease traffic congestion.
