By Belize Live News Staff: A police officer from Belmopan has been charged alongside three other suspects in connection with a series of armed robberies targeting businesses across Cayo. Over the past five months, business owners reported numerous hold-ups by individuals dressed in police-style uniforms, instilling fear in the community and creating mistrust.
The suspects, identified as Jonathan David Cruz, Eva Dawson (a police officer), Robert Andrew Tillett, and Elijah Cruz, face multiple charges for a string of robberies that affected several establishments, including pharmacies, gas stations, and restaurants. The crew allegedly carried out seven armed heists at well-known locations such as Tomza Gas, Lopez Pharmacy, Corkers Restaurant, and Best Care Pharmacy.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hilberto Romero, head of the Eastern Division, confirmed that an extensive investigation led to the arrests. “Several searches were conducted, and items were recovered that led to the charges being levied at this time,” Romero stated. Police were able to gather substantial evidence linking the suspects to the incidents, which spanned from June to the present.
The accused have all been remanded, with Jonathan David Cruz and Officer Eva Dawson facing seven counts of conspiracy to commit robbery. Additional charges were filed against Robert Andrew Tillett and Elijah Cruz for their alleged roles in two of the robberies.
