By Belize Live News Staff: Tragedy struck during an inter-office Christmas Cup football match between the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena when 54-year-old Luis “Sweets” Martinez collapsed on the field. Martinez, a former footballer, scored the first goal for his team before suffering what appeared to be a heart attack during halftime while resting on the bench at Falcon Field in San Ignacio.
Emergency responders from the Santa Elena Fire Department rushed him to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, but Martinez was pronounced dead upon arrival. Despite the devastating news, his team decided to continue playing and ultimately won the match, dedicating the victory to their late teammate.
