Police investigate shocking case of woman held hostage by husband’s family in Belmopan

By Belize Live News Staff: A 23-year-old woman has escaped after allegedly being held captive for eight days by her husband’s family in Belmopan, police said on Wednesday.

The woman told police she was tied up, starved, and physically assaulted by her 24-year-old husband, his 45-year-old father, and 43-year-old mother. She also accused her father-in-law, a Guatemalan pastor, of sexual assault.

Authorities said the woman was confined under a staircase at the family’s home and denied access to basic hygiene facilities. She managed to escape and report the incident on October 23.

All three suspects are currently in police custody, according to Police Commissioner Chester Williams, who added that investigators are assessing the charges to be filed.

A family friend has disputed the woman’s account, but police are continuing their investigation.
