BTL Union opposes Elon Musk’s Starlink entry into Belize

Starlink seeks license to provide nationwide internet service in Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: Employees of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), represented by the Belize Communications Workers Union, are pushing back against Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, as it seeks approval to enter Belize’s telecommunications market. The union has sent a formal letter of objection to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), warning that allowing Starlink’s entry could have far-reaching consequences for the local telecom industry, employment, and security.

The letter argues that Starlink’s market entry could negatively impact job security for BTL employees and other local service providers, stating, “If the Starlink application is approved, it could have significant negative impacts on the telecom industry, the broader community, and current and future job security in Belize.”

The union further highlighted concerns that Starlink could undermine investments made by the government and Social Security Board in BTL.

As the application is under review by the PUC, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to the union’s concerns.
