Ladyville man shot while riding bicycle, gunmen flee scene

Belize City residents on edge after shots ring out near Hangar

By Belize Live News Staff: On Saturday, October 19, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m., the Belize Police Department responded to a shooting incident in Ladyville. Officers arrived at Egbert Quilter Street, where they found a black 24-inch male-frame beach cruiser bicycle, but no bullet shells were recovered at the scene.

The victim, identified as 39-year-old construction worker Lenny Benguche, was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) with two gunshot wounds. Medical staff reported that his condition was stable. Benguche explained that while riding his bicycle, two male individuals dressed in dark clothing emerged from a bushy lot and shot at him. After firing four shots, the assailants fled the area on foot.

Authorities visited the scene and documented it with photographs. Investigators attempted to access footage from nearby surveillance cameras but found that the cameras were not positioned toward the crime scene.

Police continue their search for the suspects as the investigation progresses.
