By Belize Live News Staff: The Alliance for Democracy (AFD) is set to hold its unity convention this Sunday, October 20, 2024 in Belize City. Despite some public speculation, Leader of the Opposition Shyne Barrow has clarified that the United Democratic Party (UDP) is not involved in any capacity.
Barrow stated that the UDP has no plans to hold any conventions, having already agreed to maintain its current executive until the next general elections. Speculation has grown over whether UDP delegates may show up at the Civic Center this weekend to elect a new party leader and chairman, but Barrow was quick to dismiss the notion, asserting that the UDP has no ties to the event.
He stressed that whatever happens during the AFD’s convention has no bearing on the UDP, particularly since the individuals involved are no longer members of the party. Barrow emphasized that the UDP remains focused on its own internal processes, guided by its constitution and leadership structure.
When asked whether UDP delegates could play a role in the upcoming event, Barrow dismissed any concerns, explaining that the UDP remains rooted in its own legal and political framework. He reiterated that whatever happens outside the UDP’s formal structure has no impact on the party’s operations or leadership decisions.
As the AFD convention draws nearer, all eyes are on whether any unexpected developments will arise. However, as far as the UDP is concerned, the event remains a non-factor in the party’s direction.
