Tropical Storm Nadine makes landfall in Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: Tropical Storm Nadine made landfall just south of Belize City at 10:00 a.m., bringing with it sustained winds of up to 50 mph and heavy rainfall. According to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), the storm continues to affect the Corozal, Belize, and Orange Walk districts, where a Tropical Storm warning remains in effect. The storm, located approximately 20 miles west-northwest of Belize City at noon today, is moving westward at 8 mph.

Residents in the northern and central regions are urged to remain indoors as Nadine is expected to bring an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain, leading to possible localized flooding. Already, parts of Belize have recorded rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches. Strong gusty winds are also creating rough sea conditions, and mariners are advised to remain in safe harbor until conditions improve.

NEMO has issued a flood warning for several key areas, including the Coastal Road from La Democracia to Hope Creek Junction, the San Ignacio low-level bridge, Iguana Creek Bridge, and Sittee River. Urban and riverine flooding is also a concern in low-lying areas across the country. Residents are encouraged to secure their homes, check on vulnerable family members, and prepare emergency food, water, and medical supplies.

Business owners in the Corozal, Orange Walk, and Belize districts, including San Pedro and Caye Caulker, are asked to remain closed until the storm passes, while essential services such as medical personnel, security forces, and public utilities will remain operational. Shelters in Belize, Cayo, and San Pedro will be opened if necessary, and residents are urged to follow official announcements from NEMO and the Belize Meteorological Service.

For more information, contact NEMO’s hotline at 936. Let’s stay safe and prepared, Belize!
