By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize has been ordered to pay more than $700,000 in compensation to the families of Corporal Yassir Mendez and Corporal Reynaldo Choco, following a tragic helicopter crash in 2020 that claimed their lives. After years of legal battles, the families of the two soldiers were awarded $428,472 and $331,226 respectively, on October 11, 2023.
The crash occurred during a military mission involving two other soldiers, Majors Adran Ramirez and Radford Baizar, who were also involved but were not part of this settlement. Attorney Audrey Matura, representing the bereaved families, fought in court for three years, advocating for proper compensation.
Initially, the government had offered $100,000 per family, but after rigorous legal submissions, a much larger compensation was granted, taking into account the loss of life expectancy, earnings, and future potential. The ruling judge, Justice Tawanda Hondora, issued a 36-page decision explaining the reasoning behind the ruling.
Audrey Matura shared her thoughts on the legal journey:
“At first, the government was reluctant to accept full responsibility, but after lengthy legal submissions, they finally did. The families of Mendez and Choco have been resilient in their patience and endurance throughout this process, and I admire their strength.”
The government now has 60 days to appeal the decision.
