By Belize Live News Staff: The Public Service Union (PSU) has voiced strong objections to the government’s decision to advertise the position of Auditor General as a contract post. In a press release, the PSU expressed concerns that treating the role like any ordinary public service position undermines its constitutional importance.
The union emphasized that the Auditor General’s office is critical to upholding government accountability and should be a permanent, tenured position with appropriate compensation. They argued that reducing the role to a contract post with a lower salary jeopardizes its independence and could invite undue influence.
The Prime Minister responded by stating that offering a contract maintains the role’s independence, and that the government had difficulty finding a suitable candidate within the public service.
