Police officers advance in train-the-trainer program for defensive tactics

By Belize Live News Staff: Today, members of the Belize Police Department’s Defensive Tactics Team entered the second week of Cohort #3 in the Train-the-Trainer program. Officers from various Southern Formations, including Punta Gorda, Placencia, Seine Bight, Independence, Hopkins, and Dangriga, have joined those from the Eastern Division and the National Police Training Academy in this specialized training.

Out of 33 officers who began the course, 24 have advanced to the next phase following a demanding selection process. Officers ranging from the ranks of corporal to constable were chosen based on a series of physical agility tests, their grasp of key techniques from the first week, and overall attitude and performance.

This intensive four-week program is designed to sharpen both theoretical and physical skills. During this second week, participants will focus on mastering foundational defensive tactics, such as:

Stances and coordinated movements

Ground-based maneuvers

Control holds to safely manage individuals

Systematic standing searches (pan down)

Quick handcuffing techniques for safe restraint

In preparation to become future instructors, officers will also learn additional advanced techniques and practice teaching these methods to each other. This “teach-back” process ensures they meet the necessary qualifications to lead defensive tactics training sessions within their respective units.

The importance of defensive tactics cannot be overstated, as they are essential to safeguarding both officers and the communities they serve. With this training, officers are better prepared to handle confrontational situations with professionalism, control, and care.

Training Team Instructors:

Sgt. C. Galvez (#165)

Cpl. C. Ack (#134)

Cpl. A. Lorenzo (#1766)

Cpl. E. Cobb (#2195)

Cpl. J. Lougue (#1615)

Cpl. M. Martinez (#1183)

P.C. R. Guity (#1281)

P.C. S. Rhaburn (#1945)

The Belize Police Department continues to invest in the professional growth of its officers, ensuring they have the tools and skills required for effective policing. This initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing public safety and fostering trust between officers and the communities they serve.
