Belize monitoring southwest Caribbean for potential cyclone development

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s National Meteorological Service (NMSB) and National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) are closely monitoring the Southwest Caribbean Sea for potential tropical cyclone formation later this week. While the chance of development is low—near zero percent over the next 48 hours and 30 percent within seven days—authorities said the system could still evolve.

Officials warned that a tropical depression or storm may form by Thursday or Friday, tracking over northern Nicaragua or Honduras. The system could weaken as it moves toward Belize, with remnants forecast to bring moderate to heavy rainfall by late Friday or Saturday.

NMSB and NEMO stressed there is no need for alarm but urged the public to stay updated through official advisories as the region remains in the height of hurricane season. Residents were advised to follow announcements issued through official channels, including government websites, social media platforms, radio, and television, and avoid spreading misinformation from unverified sources.

“The most important takeaway is that there is no need to panic,” NMSB said in a joint statement with NEMO.

NMSB is working alongside the National Hurricane Centre and the Caribbean Meteorological Organization to monitor the situation. The statement clarified that only the Prime Minister, acting on advice from the Chief Meteorologist and NEMO’s National Emergency Coordinator, can issue storm watches or warnings for Belize.

The National Emergency Operations Centre and district-level emergency teams remain on standby, ready to respond to any potential threats.

NEMO has activated its emergency hotline at 936. The agency encouraged the public to stay prepared and monitor further updates closely.
