11-month-old killed in hit-and-run on Belize’s Hummingbird Highway

By Belize Live News Staff: An 11-month-old girl has died following a tragic hit-and-run accident on Belize’s Hummingbird Highway on Monday night, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred between miles 49 and 50 of the highway, near the Agua Viva community.

According to reports, 45-year-old Moises Mejia was traveling on a motorcycle with his partner, 27-year-old Kaylie Aparicio, and their two children when a silver or grey Toyota Forerunner SUV rear-ended them around 7 p.m. local time. The driver of the SUV, which reportedly had no license plates and customized fenders, fled the scene without offering assistance.

A passerby stopped and rushed the injured family to the Western Regional Hospital. Tragically, 11-month-old Giselle Mejia succumbed to severe head trauma and was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. Aparicio and the couple’s 23-month-old toddler sustained abrasions and cuts, while Mejia suffered minor injuries but complained of pain in his right arm.

The police are investigating the incident, and the family is appealing to the public for help in locating the hit-and-run driver.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the vehicle or driver involved to come forward, as the search intensifies for the suspect responsible for the fatal crash.
