By Belize Live News Staff: In an unusual case, 90-year-old Roy Alec Tillett, a Belizean American and former U.S. Air Force soldier, pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle controlled substances into Belize. Tillett was detained at the Philip Goldson International Airport on October 5th after customs officers discovered 5.28 pounds of marijuana in his luggage.
In court, Tillett was fined $7,000 for the drug charge, along with an additional $5 court fee. If unpaid, he faces up to three years in prison. Tillett also faces customs violations, having been found with $33,800 in cash, which included both Belizean and U.S. currency. The court has granted him bail of $10,000 for the customs charges, and he could face additional penalties if the full amount is not declared.
Tillett is scheduled to appear in court again in December.
