By Belize Live News Staff: Omar Figueroa, UDP Cayo North Standard Bearer, is raising concerns about voter registration irregularities in the latest transfer period. According to Figueroa, the registration officer has failed to provide accurate house numbers for voters, making it difficult to verify where they are registered. He points out that 283 voters were registered, with at least 100 deemed suspicious.
Figueroa explained that repeated attempts to address the issue with the Chief Elections Officer have been ignored, leaving him with limited options. His team has escalated the matter to the Governor-General and international organizations such as the OAS.
In one specific example, Figueroa mentioned that several voters were reportedly registered to nonexistent or incorrect addresses, such as the case of 28 people allegedly living on a single street, raising doubts about the legitimacy of the process.
Despite these challenges, Figueroa made some progress on Monday in the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court. The magistrate has requested more data from the elections and boundaries department to assist in verifying the registrations, with the case adjourned until Friday.
