By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s Vital Statistics Unit is under investigation after it was revealed that fraudulent birth certificates were used to secure at least two fake passports, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The passports, issued to individuals born in the U.S., have been canceled as police continue their probe into the scam.
According to 7News Belize, police investigations indicate that fake social security cards were also created using the fraudulent birth certificates. The Vital Statistics Unit has confirmed that these documents were not issued through its official systems.
In a press release, the Vital Statistics Unit (VSU) stated that further interviews are being conducted, and charges will soon be brought against those involved. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Immigration and the Social Security Board are taking measures to prevent future fraud.
Reports allege that the counterfeit birth certificates were sold for $5,000 each, and authorities are working to ensure stronger safeguards for the country’s identification processes.
