By Belize Live News Staff: The National Garifuna Council (NGC) on Monday announced the theme for this year’s 19th Garifuna Celebrations: “Afeduha waméi wagücha, afareinha waméi wanichigu!” – “Celebrating our roots; sharing our culture.” The theme was submitted by Biviana McDougall, a teacher from Gulisi Community Primary School.
Chosen by the Garifuna Language Commission, the theme underscores the importance of honoring cultural and historical roots, while embracing the traditions that have shaped the Garifuna community. It highlights the need for a strong connection to one’s heritage as a foundation for identity and belonging.
The NGC said the theme also emphasizes the responsibility of passing down knowledge and values to future generations, ensuring that Garifuna culture continues to thrive.
