Belize’s Cahal Pech to welcome World Sustainable Travel Awards on September 27th

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize will play host to the inaugural World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA) on September 27th, with the ceremony set to take place at the historic Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve in San Ignacio Town. This new event, a sister program to the prestigious World Travel Awards, will recognize top global innovators in sustainability within the travel and hospitality sectors.

Cahal Pech, an ancient Maya site dating back to 1,200 BC, provides a unique and culturally significant backdrop for the awards. Justin Cooke, Executive Vice-President of WSTHA, underscored the significance of the location: “We are thrilled to bring our inaugural ceremony to Belize, and we couldn’t think of a more fitting venue than Cahal Pech. This site represents sustainable tourism and perfectly aligns with our mission to highlight those leading the charge in protecting our planet for future generations.”

Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, expressed the broader vision behind the awards, stating: “These awards are not just about celebrating achievements but about setting a new standard for the travel and hospitality industries. The leaders we will recognize are driving the transformative change needed to achieve our vision of Net Positive Hospitality.”

Belize’s Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, shared his enthusiasm as the final preparations are underway. “We are in the final stages of preparation for the World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards at Cahal Pech. This significant Maya site will serve as an iconic location to honor those making strides in sustainability across the globe,” said Mahler.

Mahler also expressed his appreciation for the entrants in the 21 award categories, noting the impressive contributions toward advancing sustainable tourism. “We look forward to welcoming the nominees and celebrating their achievements while showcasing Belize’s commitment to sustainable tourism on an international stage,” he added.

As Belize readies for the event, the country will take center stage in the global sustainability conversation, underscoring its role in promoting responsible tourism while honoring the innovators shaping the future of travel and hospitality.
