By Belize Live News Staff: Belize health officials are ramping up preparedness for a potential MPox outbreak, although no cases have been reported in the country.
The move comes after neighboring Mexico confirmed cases of the Clade II variant, prompting Belize’s National Committee for Epidemiological Defense to issue a warning.
Health Minister Kevin Bernard reassured the public, stating Belize has stockpiled vaccines and in-country testing capabilities. “We are constantly ensuring that surveillance is done… I am very confident that our people at the ministry are prepared and ready,” he said.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness is re-sensitizing healthcare workers and border teams, emphasizing early detection and containment.
MPox, a zoonotic disease transmissible from animals to humans and between people, can cause fever, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, and skin blisters.
While there’s no immediate cause for alarm, Belize authorities are taking a proactive approach to safeguard public health.
