By Belize Live News Staff: Belize and Mexico held talks on Tuesday aimed at deepening trade ties and exploring potential collaboration in agriculture and tourism, building on historically close relations between the two countries.
A Mexican delegation met with officials from Belize’s agriculture and foreign trade ministries in Orange Walk, following up on discussions between the countries’ leaders in 2022.
Belize Agriculture Minister Jose Mai highlighted potential areas for cooperation, including continued tariff-free cattle exports to Mexico, green coconut exports, and the possibility of Belize exporting sugar and sugar products to Mexico.
Mexico’s Vice Minister for Foreign Relations, Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas, expressed confidence in expanding trade ties and emphasized closer collaboration with Belize, particularly in the areas of communications, commerce, and tourism.
Both sides also discussed the potential impact of Mexico’s Tren Maya project, a major infrastructure initiative, on Belize. Mexico is looking to expand the railway south of the border.
While no concrete agreements were announced, the talks reflect a desire on both sides to strengthen economic ties. Mexico views Belize as a potential gateway to the wider Caribbean and Central American markets.
Belize, in turn, sees Mexico as a major potential export market for its agricultural products.
