Belize Police Officers receive sign language training

By Belize Live News Staff: Over 30 police officers from the Belize and Cayo districts are currently undergoing sign language training. Commander of Community Policing, Howell Gillett, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “As a police organization, we have a duty of care to all our citizens.”

The training is being conducted by the National Community Policing Unit of the Belize Police Department. Gillett explained that officers regularly interact with the public, which includes individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

“Knowing sign language allows officers to communicate directly and effectively with these individuals without relying on interpreters or written notes, which can be slow and less effective in certain situations,” Gillett noted.

He also highlighted the importance of clear communication in emergency situations. “In emergency situations, quick and clear communication is critical. Being able to understand and respond to someone using sign language can help de-escalate situations, gather important information, and ensure that everyone involved is safe.”

Gillett believes that knowledge of sign language can significantly reduce the risks of miscommunication by enabling officers to better understand the needs and intentions of deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. This initiative reflects the Belize Police Department’s commitment to providing inclusive and effective service to all members of the community.
