By Belize Live News Staff: The European Union-funded E-Mobility Pilot Project is progressing steadily in Belize, with two electric buses already operational in Belize City. The project, aiming to modernize Belize’s transportation sector and promote sustainable energy solutions, is actively addressing private sector concerns.
The initiative recognizes the vital role of the private sector in the country’s bus industry. To ensure a seamless transition to low-carbon transport, the project is exploring innovative business models and financing mechanisms that will encourage private sector participation in the expanding electric vehicle market.
The project encompasses both intra-city and inter-district transit systems. While the Belize City Council manages two electric buses within the city, the inter-district pilot will be operated by the private sector. The government has approved a two-year contract for three additional electric buses, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will soon issue a Request for Proposal to identify suitable private-sector operators.
The E-Mobility project is committed to fostering a comprehensive and inclusive approach towards sustainable transportation. Key activities include the development of implementation frameworks for electric vehicle deployment, a national transport strategy, and viable business models. These efforts will involve extensive collaboration with financial institutions, private sector stakeholders, government representatives, and energy providers.
The project, funded by the European Union and implemented in partnership with the UNDP, the Belize City Council, and relevant ministries, seeks to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services while paving the way for a low-carbon transport future in Belize.
The project team remains dedicated to ongoing engagement with both the public and private sectors, ensuring a collaborative and successful transition to e-mobility in the country.
