Former Chief Justice of Belize, Dr. Abdulai O. Conteh, passes away

By Belize Live News Staff: The Judiciary of Belize mourns the loss of Dr. the Hon Abdulai O. Conteh, the 28th Chief Justice of Belize, who passed away on August 2nd, 2024. Chief Justice Louise Blenman, on behalf of the Judiciary, expressed deep sorrow and acknowledged Conteh’s unwavering dedication to the rule of law and the Belizean constitution.

Dr. Conteh served as Chief Justice from 2000 to 2010, leaving behind a rich legacy. He was known for his erudition, brilliant legal mind, and commitment to fairness and justice. His leadership brought much-needed stability and reform to the judicial system, including the modernization of the court system.

During his tenure, Chief Justice Conteh introduced numerous reforms that strengthened the administration of justice in Belize. He implemented new Judges’ Rules, Supreme Court Rules, and a Code of Ethics, establishing a rigorous system for the delivery and practice of law. His impact extended beyond Belize, as his contributions to Caribbean jurisprudence were recognized and respected across the region and the wider Commonwealth.

Chief Justice Blenman highlighted Dr. Conteh’s mentorship and inspiration to many in the legal community. His work laid a solid foundation for future generations and his legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.

On behalf of the Judiciary and the people of Belize, Chief Justice Blenman extended deepest condolences to Dr. Conteh’s family, friends, and colleagues.
