By Belize Live News Staff: The Catholic Diocese of Belize has joined the global outcry against the artistic display showcased during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics. The depiction of drag queens at a feast table, interpreted by many as a mockery of the Last Supper, has drawn widespread condemnation from the Christian community.
While artistic director Thomas Jolly claims the display was an homage to a 17th-century painting referencing Greek mythology, the Belizean diocese argues it was “doubly offensive,” both for its perceived ridicule of a sacred Christian event and for the subsequent apology issued by the Olympics Committee.
The diocese’s statement criticized the committee’s response, asserting that it shifted blame onto Christians for being offended rather than acknowledging any wrongdoing. The statement concluded, “Insult upon injury.”
The controversy has sparked debate about the boundaries of artistic expression and cultural sensitivity, with several companies canceling their advertising buys in the Olympic coverage following the display.
