Belize celebrates Emancipation Day

By Belize Live News Staff: Today, August 1st, Belize joins the Caribbean community in commemorating Emancipation Day, an important occasion marking the abolition of slavery in 1838. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles endured and the triumphs achieved by our ancestors in their fight for freedom.

Belize’s official recognition of Emancipation Day came on January 11th, 2021, thanks to the tireless advocacy of organizations like the UBAD Educational Foundation (UEF) and other dedicated individuals. This historic decision aligned Belize with its Caribbean neighbors in honoring the legacy of emancipation.

Emancipation Day is a time for reflection, acknowledging the painful history of slavery while celebrating the resilience and strength of those who fought for liberation. It is also a day to recognize that the journey towards true equality and justice is ongoing.

As we commemorate this day, the words of Marcus Garvey resonate deeply: “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind.”

Belize Live News encourages all Belizeans to delve into the history of slavery in our nation and to actively participate in the various events and activities organized to mark this occasion.

Happy Emancipation Day to all Belizeans!
