By Belize Live News Staff: The US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Eric Jacobstein, is currently in Belize to engage in several high-level discussions and public events as part of the Central American Regional Security Initiative. His visit underscores the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to strengthening relationships within the region.
During his visit, Jacobstein is set to hold important meetings with Belize’s Foreign Minister, Francis Fonseca. While the specifics of these discussions remain confidential, Jacobstein emphasized the strategic importance of Belize to the United States. He remarked, “Such an honor to be here in Belize with our fantastic ambassador, Michelle Kwan. For the United States and the Biden-Harris administration, our relationship with Belize is a top priority.”
Jacobstein acknowledged Belize’s leadership on key issues such as democracy, recognition of Taiwan, and migration management through the Los Angeles Declaration. “For me, it’s really an opportunity to check in with government leaders, have important conversations, and really demonstrate our strong support for the U.S.-Belize partnership,” he added.
When questioned about a rumored trilateral meeting involving the US, Belize, and Guatemala, Jacobstein was reticent, stating only that the countries continue to collaborate closely on regional matters without providing further details on future meetings.
Jacobstein’s visit highlights ongoing US efforts to bolster regional security and cooperation, with Belize playing a pivotal role in these initiatives.
