By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Crime Observatory has released its latest crime statistics, revealing a 15% decrease in major crimes from April to June 2024 compared to the same period last year. Despite this overall decline, the murder rate for the first half of the year has seen a significant increase.
During the April to June period, the police department recorded a total of 239 major crimes, categorized as follows: 30 murders, 10 rapes, 40 robberies, 118 burglaries, 25 thefts, and 16 cases of unlawful sexual intercourse. This reduction in major crimes suggests some success in the efforts of law enforcement agencies and community initiatives aimed at crime prevention.
However, the number of murders from January to June has escalated sharply. In 2023, there were 44 murders during this timeframe, but in 2024, this figure has risen to 57, highlighting a worrying trend in violent crime.
In addition to the changes in major crimes, the report indicates an 8% decrease in reports of domestic violence between April and June 2024, with 67 fewer cases than the previous year. Last year, 337 cases were reported during this period, compared to 373 this year.
A closer look at the month-to-month comparison for June 2023 versus June 2024 shows a mixed picture: murders increased by 50%, rapes decreased by 60%, robberies went up by 36%, burglaries decreased by 21%, theft decreased by 44%, and the number of reports of unlawful sexual intercourse remained constant, with 7 cases reported in each month.
These statistics reflect both progress and challenges in Belize’s ongoing efforts to combat crime. While the decrease in major crimes and domestic violence reports is encouraging, the rise in murders underscores the need for continued vigilance and enhanced strategies to address violent crime in the country.
