By Belize Live News Staff: In a show of Caribbean solidarity, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has deployed a team of eight skilled electricians to Jamaica to assist in the recovery efforts following the devastating impact of Category 4 Hurricane Beryl.
The hurricane, which struck Jamaica on July 3rd and 4th, 2024, with winds of 140 mph, caused widespread damage to the island’s power infrastructure, leaving many communities without electricity. St. Elizabeth Parish was one of the areas hardest hit by the storm.
The BEL team, consisting of seven Power Line Technicians and one Line Supervisor, departed for Jamaica on Saturday, July 20th. They will be working alongside other power line crews from Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) member countries to rebuild high and low-voltage networks and service lines across the island.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to these dedicated employees for their service and for supporting the mission to assist a fellow nation in their efforts to rebuild and restore normalcy to their country as swiftly as possible,” said a BEL spokesperson.
The team is expected to be in Jamaica until August 10th, 2024. Their efforts are a testament to the spirit of cooperation and mutual support that exists among Caribbean nations, particularly in times of crisis.
This initiative also underscores the important role that CARILEC plays in facilitating collaboration and resource sharing among its member countries. CARILEC is an association of electric energy solutions providers and other stakeholders operating in the electricity industry in the Caribbean region, Central and South America, and globally.
