By Belize Live News Staff: As Hurricane Beryl barrels towards the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize is on high alert, preparing for the potential impacts of the powerful storm. While a direct landfall is unlikely, the country is bracing for heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and gusty winds.
The latest advisory from the National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMS) and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) indicates that Beryl, currently a Category 3 hurricane, is expected to make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula tonight or early Friday morning. While Belize may be spared the brunt of the storm, the outer bands are expected to bring significant rainfall, with totals ranging from 4 to 6 inches and potentially higher in some areas. This deluge of rain poses a serious risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions.
Northern districts, including Corozal and Orange Walk, as well as the islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, are under a Tropical Storm Watch. Residents in these areas are advised to be vigilant and prepared for potential impacts, including gusty winds, strong thunderstorms, and rough sea conditions.
NEMO has updated its directives in response to the latest advisory. While businesses and government offices in the Belize District will remain open today, residents are urged to finalize their emergency plans, check supplies, and be ready to relocate if necessary. Shelters have been identified in Corozal, Orange Walk, and San Pedro Town and will open if needed.
In an effort to mitigate the risk of flooding, municipalities and the public are encouraged to continue clearing drains. NEMO also advises interests in the agriculture and tourism sectors to take necessary precautions and keep visitors informed of the situation.
As Belizeans closely monitor the storm’s progress, NEMO emphasizes the importance of staying informed and following official updates from the NMS and NEMO. All NEMO district emergency operations centers remain activated, and the public is urged to report any suspicious calls claiming to be from NEMO to the hotline at 936.
