By Belize Live News Staff: Residents of Toledo East will head to the polls on July 17 to elect a new area representative, following the death of Hon. Michael Espat in April. Espat, who had served since 1989, passed away from a heart attack in Belmopan at the age of 75. He was the longest-serving parliamentarian in Belize, having completed six terms.
The primary political parties have selected their candidates to contest the by-election. The People’s United Party (PUP) held a convention last weekend, where Dr. Osmond Martinez emerged as the new standard bearer, receiving 1762 votes. He triumphed over Melhem Espat, son of the late Michael Espat, and Nicanor Requena, brother of Minister Oscar Requena.
Dr. Martinez will face off against Dennis “Desho” Williams of the United Democratic Party (UDP), and Wil Maheia of the People’s National Party (PNP).
Prime Minister John Briceño has requested a writ of election to be drafted and released soon, expressing his desire for the by-election to be held as early as possible after consulting with the Elections and Boundaries Commission.
The Toledo East by-election will determine who will hold office until the 2025 general elections. This event marks another significant political transition, similar to the 2021 by-election following David “Dido” Vega’s death and the 2003 by-election after the passing of Hon. Agripino “Pino” Cawich.
