By Belize Live News Staff: Doris Grant, a 50-year-old Belize City woman out on bail for charges related to alleged financial fraud, was injured in a shooting early Sunday morning.
Grant and a companion, 31-year-old Austin Underwood, were traveling in a vehicle when they were attacked at the corner of South Creek and Fairweather Streets shortly after 3 a.m. The assailant fired at least 12 shots at the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Grant and Underwood, despite their injuries, managed to drive themselves to the KHMH for treatment. Grant was previously charged in May with 14 counts of theft, 14 counts of obtaining property by deception, and 12 counts of obtaining money transfer by deception. The charges stem from allegations that she collected $121,000 through deceptive means between January and July 2022.
Following her arrest in May, Grant was granted bail of $50,000 under the conditions that she surrender all travel documents, report to the police station weekly, and avoid contact with witnesses in the case.
The shooting incident, coupled with Grant’s ongoing legal troubles, has garnered significant attention in Belize. Grant is the common-law wife of Alex Underwood, a well-known figure recently charged with gang affiliation. While the motive for the shooting remains under investigation, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of individuals involved in high-profile legal cases and brought the issue of gun violence in the city back into focus.
