By Belize Live News Staff: A Belizean woman’s social media account of being shuffled between police stations while trying to report an assault on her niece has sparked public outrage and a promise of action from the country’s top police official.
The woman described a frustrating ordeal involving multiple police departments in various locations, including Santa Cruz, Independence, Mango Creek, and Bella Vista. Officers reportedly gave conflicting instructions and excuses, citing jurisdictional issues and even a broken computer. The incident began after the woman’s niece was assaulted and told by the attackers that they had control over the situation.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams responded directly to the woman’s social media post, apologizing for the inadequate service and assuring her that such behavior would not be tolerated within the police force. Williams, who emphasized the police’s duty to serve the public, invited the woman to contact him for further assistance.
This incident unfolds against a backdrop of increased scrutiny of Belize’s police force following a series of high-profile crimes nationwide. The woman’s account has raised concerns about potential corruption and favoritism within the department, fueled by the perpetrators’ alleged claims of influence.
While the Commissioner’s swift response and pledge for corrective measures offer some hope for improved accountability, the incident highlights the need for systemic reforms to ensure consistent and timely assistance from law enforcement for all Belizean citizens.
