By Belize Live News Staff: Forecasters are urging countries across the Atlantic, including Belize, to brace for what could be a very active and dangerous hurricane season. The 2025 season officially begins on June 1, and early indicators suggest it may mirror or even exceed the intensity of 2024, one of the most destructive seasons on record.
Meteorologists at AccuWeather predict 13 to 18 named storms this year, with 7 to 10 of those expected to become hurricanes. Three to five could reach major hurricane strength—Category 3 or higher—and at least three to six storms are expected to have direct impacts on the United States. While the U.S. is always a focus in these reports, the Caribbean—and Belize in particular—must not be complacent. Warmer waters across the Atlantic Basin, including the Caribbean Sea, mean any disturbance that forms could strengthen rapidly, leaving little time to react.
Rapid intensification is a growing threat. It’s the process where storms explode in strength in less than 24 hours, which has become more frequent in recent years. Belizeans saw the impact of this with past storms that changed from manageable systems to destructive hurricanes seemingly overnight. Meteorologist Alex DaSilva says the trend is likely to continue, especially with sea-surface temperatures and ocean heat content remaining above normal for this time of year.
The forecast shows that while the first half of the season may be quiet, the second half could become explosively active, especially if La Niña conditions develop. That would make the September to November stretch particularly dangerous, echoing 2024 when most of the season’s major storms struck late in the year.
The next few weeks are critical for preparation. Whether it’s restocking emergency supplies, reviewing evacuation plans, or simply staying up to date with credible forecasts, the time to act is now. Belize has been lucky in recent years, but with the Atlantic heating up and storm systems trending stronger and faster, that luck could easily run out.
