By Belize Live News Staff: Belize and Mexico are taking steps to strengthen trade, connectivity, and security — all from a mid-week phone call.
Prime Minister John Briceño and newly sworn-in Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum connected by phone on Wednesday to discuss a shared future on everything from beef exports to railway links.
The Mexican government said the talk reinforced a “solid friendship,” with both countries aligned on infrastructure goals like the Zaragoza Bridge and expansion of the Maya Train — a project that Belize has actively sought to extend across the Hondo River since January.
Belizean officials say the conversation also touched on expanding market access for Belizean cattle and coconuts, an increase in power supply collaboration, and new commitments to regional security.
Both countries committed to holding in-person talks soon. A Mexican delegation will be sent to Belize as part of a follow-up process.
For Belize, the conversation signals momentum in long-standing efforts to boost exports, improve regional transport, and cement strategic ties with its northern neighbor.
